Singapore, a tiny red dot on the world map, is the place that I’m grateful to call home. It’s where my family, friends, and the people I cherish most reside. More than just a city, it’s a melting pot of cultures, a place of endless possibilities, and a home that fosters growth and resilience. It has also been a place of opportunity and growth for me.
Here are a few reasons why I’m glad to call Singapore, Home. Truly.
Education: The Great Leveller
Singapore’s education system is highly regarded and produces top-notch students, with a literacy rate of over 97%. My journey is a testament to its meritocratic spirit. Growing up in the heartlands, Mee Toh Primary was my first step into the world of learning. My school had very basic facilities, and the majority of students spoke only Mandarin. But in spite of the school’s humble beginnings, the teachers were exceptional, with a passion to educate. Their dedication ignited a spark in me that propelled me forward.
Under their tutelage, I did well enough at the PSLE to get into CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School. This opened the doors to a new world – with huge school grounds, a full sized running track, numerous science labs and music studios, and a diverse universe of students from all walks of life. This helped to set me on the path that I am on today.
Economic Stability: A Solid Ground
Singapore has a strong and stable economy, with a high standard of living and a per capita GDP that’s one of the highest in the world. As a financial hub, it offers a myriad of opportunities for individuals to enhance their financial well-being. Here, we have access to a wide variety of financial products that the working class can invest in to elevate their financial standing. I have been able to pursue my goals without undue financial stress. It’s a privilege to live in a country where economic growth is coupled with a strong social safety net.
Our nation’s economic stability has been a cornerstone of progress. It has provided a platform for individuals to achieve their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society. The CPF, in particular, stands as a testament to Singapore’s foresight in ensuring the financial well-being of its citizens.
CPF: A Pillar of Security
The Central Provident Fund (CPF) is more than just a savings scheme; it’s a cornerstone of Singapore’s social safety net. From housing to healthcare and retirement, the CPF plays a crucial role in ensuring financial security for its citizens. It’s a tangible benefit that provides peace of mind, knowing that there’s a safety net in place for life’s major milestones.
- Forced Savings: CPF helps you save for retirement, housing, and healthcare through automatic deductions.
- Compound Interest: CPF accounts earn interest, allowing your savings to grow over time.
- Housing Assistance: CPF can be used for down payments, mortgage repayments, and housing upgrades.
- Healthcare Support: CPF can be used for medical expenses and insurance premiums.
- Retirement Income: CPF provides a steady income stream in retirement.
- Tax Benefits: CPF contributions and interest earned are tax-free.
The CPF is a great foundation piece for Singaporeans, and acts as a safety net for many of my clients, who are able to diversify their investments with assurance.
Safety and Security: Peace of Mind
Singapore is considered one of the safest cities in the world, with low crime rates and strict laws. As a woman, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I can walk freely without fear. This sense of security is particularly important. It is a privilege to live in a society where I can be myself without constant worry of physical harm.
We have a healthcare system that prioritises accessibility and quality. The government’s commitment to subsidising healthcare costs has made essential medical services attainable for many. While navigating the healthcare landscape can sometimes be complex, the system’s focus on preventive care and early intervention has contributed to the nation’s overall health and well-being.
In my job, I am able to combine using Medisave with personal health insurance to ensure my clients have a comprehensive structure to protect them from any unexpected health issues.
World-Class Infrastructure: A Catalyst for Success
Singapore has a well-developed and efficient public transportation system. The efficient public transport system is the backbone of our city, making commuting a breeze. As someone who’s constantly on the move, this seamless connectivity is invaluable.
While Singapore offers a high quality of life, it’s not without its challenges. The relentless pace of life, the constant pressure to succeed, and the high cost of living can be overwhelming at times. LGBTQ people here still face significant discrimination. Despite these hurdles, the resilience and support network I’ve found here have been invaluable.
Singapore is a city of contrasts, a place where opportunities abound but so do pressures. I am truly grateful for the life I’ve built here.
Happy 59th Birthday! Majulah!
